Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Ailene M. Broadbent Mohave Community College Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) ADHD is one of the most common neurological disorders diagnosed and treated in children. ADHD often affects a child’s ability to focused for any amount of time and can affect their life adversely if not diagnosed and treated properly. One of the problems with ADHD is that it can be difficult to diagnose and treat, because there are many different conditions that may have the same symptoms as ADHD. So, what symptoms define ADHD and how are they with used to help diagnose and treat ADHD? What kinds of treatments are available and how do they help improve symptoms and adversities of ADHD? Symptoms Many†¦show more content†¦Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Just like with inattention some hyperactivity and impulsivity, especially in children, would be considered normal. However, someone with ADHD, would consistently has at least 5 (if 17 or older) or 6 (if under the age of 16) symptoms that describe hyperactivity and inattention. Some of these symptoms include, leaving a seat when remaining seated is expected, talks excessively, has trouble waiting for a turn, blurts out answers even before the question is completed and often interrupts or intrudes on others (Symptoms and Diagnosis | ADHD | NCBDDD | CDC, 2017). Diagnosis Correctly diagnosing ADHD continues to be challenging. One of the reasons it is challenging is because there is no single test that can be used to diagnose ADHD. Another reason is because there are several different disorders and conditions that can have similar symptoms. These other disorders and conditions must be ruled out before an ADHD diagnosis can be made. According to the CDC, â€Å"Healthcare professionals use the guidelines in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth edition (DSM-5)1, to help diagnose ADHD. This diagnostic standard helps ensure that people are appropriately diagnosed and treated for ADHD.
